It is located in Northern Cambodia. In SouthEast Asia, it is considered as the most important archaeological sites. This park is 400 square kilometer long. In 1992, this park was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angkor has no accommodation but you can stay at Siem Reap town which is only at a distance of 6kms from the park. When constructed it was considered as Hindu Temple, but lot of Buddhist structure can be seen. The best season to visit the park is between November to February.
Some of the most famous temples that one should visit when at the park are:
Angkor Wat Temple dominates the list of temples at the Angkor Archaeological park. It is the majestic piece and took almost 30 years to complete. Dedicated Vishnu Lord temple designed with three level. Each level has many galleries in the shape of a square. The top most level, which is the third level is the most impressive and appealing as you can get the view of the whole park. The climb is steep but its definitely worth the efforts.
One of the major attraction of Angkor Wat are its wall carvings. The walls are covered with carvings of many devatas and apsaras. The most famous ones are the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, the Battle of Kurukshetra and finally the Army of Suryavarman II.
Many mistake it as a temple but infact it is a city in itself. It’s the Great Angkor City. It includes many temples and historic sites that are worth a watch. Angkor Thom is 10 square kilometer in size. One can visit this place through five different gates.
Some temples inside Angkor Thom that one should definitely visit are:
Bayon – It is located at the center in Angkor Thom. It is an amazing temple to explore. There are 216 smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara looking at you when you enter inside. 54 towers surrounds the temple. Must visit temple, even though there are maze tunnels, blocked doorways and steep dangerous stairs.
Baphuon – It got famous as the most complicated jigsaw puzzle place. Many pieces of the structure had fallen off and archaeologists faced a tough time to understand which stone would fit at which place.
Terrace of the Elephants – This terrace is long and about 350 meter in size.
Jayavarnam VII stood on this platform to watch the returning army who have gained the victory. Lions & garudas carvings can be seen on the stairs of temple. The walls of the terrace have carvings of elephants and their guardians.
In the movie “Tomb Raider” this temple was highly showcased. This pushed Cambodia in the list of tourist destinations. Tourists now visit this temple to take a picture under the big tree where Angelina Jolie once was standing in an action scene in the movie. The best time to visit this temple is in the early hours of the day, meaning in mornings. The sounds are amazing around the live jungle surrounding the temple. Also the light is amazing and perfect for those who want to capture this beautiful piece of nature, called as the Jungle Temple. There are not many great carvings on the walls of this temple. However a carving which recently gained fame and became a sight of interest is of Stegosaurus carving, which is a kind of dinosaur.
